Job Description:
Position Summary:
The Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) is responsible for providing specialized instruction and services to students who are blind or have visual impairments. The TVI collaborates with general and special education staff, families, and related service providers to ensure access to the curriculum and development of compensatory skills necessary for independence and success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct functional vision assessments and learning media assessments for eligible students.
Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in collaboration with IEP team members.
Provide direct and consultative services in areas such as Braille instruction, orientation and mobility (in collaboration with O&M specialists), assistive technology, and daily living skills.
Modify and adapt general education materials into accessible formats (Braille, large print, digital, tactile graphics).
Provide in-service training and support to classroom teachers and staff regarding accommodations, accessibility, and inclusive practices.
Collaborate with families to provide training and resources to support student learning and independence.
Monitor student progress and adjust instructional plans as needed.
Assist in the transition planning process for students moving between grades, schools, or post-secondary programs.
Maintain compliance with IDEA and state/district special education regulations and procedures.
Advocate for the inclusion and accessibility of students with visual impairments in all school activities.
Qualifications:
Valid state teaching license with endorsement in Visual Impairment.
Knowledge of Braille, Nemeth Code, and assistive technology tools for visually impaired students.
Experience working with children who are blind or have low vision in a school setting preferred.
Strong collaboration and communication skills.
Ability to work across multiple school sites.
Physical Demands:
Ability to travel between schools and student homes as necessary.
Ability to carry and manage adaptive equipment and materials.
Occasional lifting and physical activity may be required for demonstrations or student assistance.
Work Environment:
This position may involve working in various educational environments including classrooms, resource rooms, and community-based settings.
