DEPARTMENT: Secondary Education / Social Studies

REPORTS TO: TMCHS Principal and TMCHS Administration

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: School Calendar/9 months

LOCATION: Turtle Mountain Community High School

POSITION SUMMARY
The High School Social Studies / Native American Studies Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in social studies, Native American Studies, and other related secondary coursework at Turtle Mountain Community High School. This position delivers standards-aligned instruction in areas such as United States history, world history, government, civics, geography, economics, Native American Studies, tribal history, tribal government, tribal culture, and other assigned courses based on district needs and student programming.

The teacher creates a safe, engaging, and academically focused classroom environment that promotes critical thinking, reading, writing, discussion, research, civic understanding, cultural awareness, and student achievement. This position works collaboratively with administration, teachers, support staff, families, and community members to support student success, school improvement, and college, career, and community readiness.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Plan and deliver instruction in assigned social studies, Native American Studies, and related courses in alignment with district curriculum, North Dakota standards, course objectives, and graduation requirements.
Develop and implement lesson plans, assessments, learning activities, and instructional materials that promote student understanding of historical events, government systems, geography, economics, civic responsibility, tribal history, tribal government, tribal culture, and contemporary issues.
Create a classroom environment that supports student engagement, respectful discussion, critical thinking, source analysis, reading comprehension, and written communication.
Differentiate instruction to meet the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of students with varied learning styles, backgrounds, and skill levels.
Use a variety of instructional strategies, educational technology, and formative and summative assessments to monitor student learning and adjust instruction as needed.
Maintain accurate and timely records related to attendance, grades, student progress, and required reporting.
Communicate regularly with students, parents, and guardians regarding academic progress, classroom expectations, behavior, and student performance.
Collaborate with general education teachers, special education staff, counselors, intervention staff, and administration to support student learning and achievement.
Integrate culturally responsive practices, local relevance, and meaningful connections to students' lived experiences when appropriate.
Maintain an orderly, respectful, and productive classroom environment consistent with school and district expectations.
Participate in professional development, staff meetings, parent-teacher conferences, IEP/504 meetings, school improvement efforts, and other district responsibilities as assigned.
Support school-sponsored activities, academic initiatives, and student supervision responsibilities as assigned.
Maintain all licensure, training, and professional responsibilities required for the position.
Perform other duties as assigned by TMCHS Administration or TMCS District Administration. 
 
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree preferred, or other preparation recognized by the Education Standards and Practices Board for the assigned content area.
Applicants must hold the appropriate North Dakota teaching license, endorsement, permit, credential, or other state-recognized authorization for the assigned coursework.
Candidates with qualifications in social studies, Native American Studies, tribal history, tribal government, tribal culture, or related secondary social science coursework will be considered.
Successful teaching experience at the secondary level is preferred.
Knowledge of social studies instruction, culturally relevant teaching practices, curriculum development, and student assessment preferred.
Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, families, and the community.
Strong organizational, communication, instructional, and classroom management skills.
Demonstrated professionalism, dependability, and commitment to student learning.
Must pass a background check and meet all district employment requirements.

RANGE OF SALARY: Based on the current Belcourt School District #7 Teacher Salary Schedule and qualifications
