Turtle Mountain Community Elementary School

DEPARTMENT: Elementary Education / Instructional Support

REPORTS TO: TMES Principal and assigned classroom teacher

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 185-day school term/2026-2027 School Calendar, or as determined by the building administrator and district need.

LOCATION: Turtle Mountain Elementary School

EVALUATION: As required by NDSCC and Belcourt School District #7 policy

POSITION SUMMARY
The Elementary Paraprofessional provides direct instructional and classroom support to students and teachers at Turtle Mountain Community Elementary School. Under the direction and supervision of the classroom teacher, the paraprofessional assists with delivering instruction, reinforcing skills, supporting student learning, and maintaining a safe, positive, and structured classroom environment. This position works closely with elementary students in grades PreK-6 to support academic engagement, behavior, and the development of foundational skills in literacy, mathematics, and other core subject areas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instructional Support
Assist the classroom teacher in delivering and reinforcing instruction in literacy, mathematics, and other core content areas.
Work with individual students or small groups to review, practice, and reinforce skills introduced by the classroom teacher.
Supply students with supplementary materials to support and extend the skills taught by the classroom teacher.
Coordinate daily activities, plans, and instructional support with the classroom teacher.
Assist students with assignments, projects, and learning activities, including computer-based tasks and online learning platforms.
Support differentiated instruction by helping students access grade-level content at their individual learning levels.
Read aloud to students, listen to students read, and support early literacy and phonics skill development as directed by the teacher.
Assist with the preparation and organization of instructional materials, manipulatives, learning centers, and classroom resources.
Provide corrections and other clerical duties as assigned by the classroom teacher.
Assist in developing supplementary and enrichment materials as directed.
 
Student Support and Supervision
Provide attentive supervision of students in the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, playground, and during transitions.
Support students in developing positive behavior, self-regulation, and social-emotional skills consistent with school-wide expectations.
Assist in maintaining a positive, safe, and structured learning environment that supports student engagement and well-being.
Assist with enforcing school rules and expectations consistent with the student handbook and school-wide behavior systems.
Reinforce positive behavior and use consistent, respectful redirection strategies with students as directed by the teacher.
Assist students in developing self-help skills, independence, and age-appropriate social skills.
Report student concerns, behavioral incidents, or health and safety issues to the classroom teacher or school administration promptly.
 
Family and School Communication
Assist teachers in communicating with students and families about student progress, activities, and school expectations as directed.
Demonstrate courtesy, respect, and professionalism in all interactions with students, families, staff, and community members.
Support the school's positive and welcoming environment for all students and families.
 
Record Keeping and Administrative Support
Assist with maintaining accurate student records, including attendance documentation, progress tracking, and other records as assigned.
Assist with the collection and organization of student work samples, assessment records, and intervention documentation as directed.
Complete required forms, logs, data sheets, and other documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
Maintain confidentiality of all student, family, and staff information consistent with FERPA, district policy, and applicable law.
 
Other Duties
Participate in required staff meetings, training, and professional development as assigned.
Demonstrate consistent punctuality, reliability, professionalism, and positive conduct.
Serve as a positive role model for students in areas of lawfulness, respectful behavior, and moral character.
Support school-wide events, activities, and student engagement efforts as assigned.
Perform other duties as assigned by the TMES Principal or classroom teacher.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
Must possess or be eligible to obtain a Paraprofessional Certificate from the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction (NDDPI).
Minimum of an Associate's Degree in Arts, Science, Business, or a related field, or a minimum of 48 college credits. A Bachelor's degree is preferred.
Experience working with elementary-age children in an educational, childcare, or youth development setting is preferred.
Knowledge of child development, elementary learning principles, and age-appropriate instructional support practices.
Ability to support students in grades PreK-5 with foundational skills in literacy, mathematics, and other core content areas.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work respectfully and effectively with young children, families, staff, and administrators.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions from classroom teachers and building administration.
Ability to maintain a patient, nurturing, and structured presence with elementary-age students.
Proficiency with basic computer applications including email, web browsers, and educational software platforms (e.g., Microsoft Office, Google Suite).
Ability to read and interpret procedural manuals, safety guidelines, and instructional materials.
Strong organizational skills; ability to manage materials, follow routines, and support a structured learning environment.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
Experience with culturally responsive practices and working with Native American students and families is preferred.
Must pass a background check and meet all district employment requirements.
Valid driver's license preferred.
