LOCATION: Turtle Mountain Community Middle School
POSITION SUMMARY
The Middle School Librarian is responsible for managing and developing the library and media center at Turtle Mountain Community Middle School to support the academic, literacy, and information needs of students in grades 6-8. This position cultivates a welcoming, resource-rich environment that promotes reading, research skills, digital literacy, and a lifelong love of learning. The Middle School Librarian collaborates with teachers and administration to integrate library resources into classroom instruction and reflects the cultural values and community context of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Nation in all aspects of library programming and collection development.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage and operate the school library and media center, including maintaining an organized, accessible, and welcoming space that serves the learning needs of students in grades 6-8.
Develop, maintain, and curate a diverse and current library collection, including print, digital, and multimedia resources, that reflects the academic curriculum, student interests, and the cultural heritage of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa community.
Collaborate with classroom teachers and administration to integrate library and information literacy skills into curriculum and instructional units across content areas.
Provide direct instruction and support to students and staff in research skills, information literacy, digital literacy, and the ethical use of information and technology.
Assist students and staff in locating and using library resources, databases, and reference materials for research, projects, and independent learning.
Promote and support a culture of reading through programming, book talks, reading incentives, displays, and other initiatives that motivate students to read for both learning and enjoyment.
Manage library systems and operations including circulation, cataloging, inventory, and resource acquisition in accordance with district policy and budget.
Maintain and troubleshoot library technology and media equipment; support students and staff in the appropriate use of technology resources available in the library.
Collaborate with special education staff, counselors, and classroom teachers to ensure equitable access to library resources and services for all students, including those with IEPs and 504 plans.
Participate in school improvement efforts, professional learning communities, staff meetings, parent conferences, and other assigned district responsibilities.
Maintain accurate records related to circulation, inventory, collection development, and library program activities.
Maintain all required licensure, certifications, and continuing education requirements for the position.
Perform other duties as assigned by TMMS Administration or TMCS District Administrative Leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS
This is an in-house vacancy announcement. To be considered for in-house positions, applicants must be currently employed by Belcourt School District #7 and must have a minimum of three (3) years of service with the District.
Bachelor's degree in Library Science, Information Science, Education, or a closely related field is required. A Master's degree in Library Science (MLS) or Library and Information Science (MLIS) is preferred.
Applicants must hold or be able to obtain prior to employment the appropriate North Dakota teaching license or library endorsement applicable to this position.
Experience working in a school library, public library, or comparable information services setting is preferred.
Knowledge of library cataloging systems, circulation software, collection development principles, and information literacy instruction is preferred.
Familiarity with digital library resources, databases, and educational technology tools used to support student research and learning is preferred.
Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, administrators, students, and families to integrate library resources into instruction.
Strong organizational, communication, and program management skills.
Ability to build positive, respectful relationships with students, families, staff, and community members.
Commitment to culturally responsive library practice, including the development of collections and programming that reflect and honor Native American cultures and the Turtle Mountain Chippewa community.
Experience working in a tribal school or with Native American student populations is preferred.
Must pass a background check and meet all district employment requirements.
RANGE OF SALARY: Based on the current Belcourt School District #7 Teacher Salary Schedule and qualifications
